WALT DURDLEGOLFINDUCTED IN 2013Walt Durdle was an outstanding athlete at Woodruff HighSchool where he played all four years in football,basketball, and golf. He was named All City quarterbackin 1950 and the following year he was crowned IllinoisHigh School golf champion. That same year, 1951, Durdlewas on the Woodruff basketball team that advanced tothe Elite Eight of the Illinois state high school tournamentin Champaign. An outstanding golfer, Walt started winningat an early age. He won the City A-Flight title in 1946 andwas Peoria Journal city medalist and champion in 1950. The next year he again won the Peoria Journal City Openalong with the Chicago Open. In 1952, Durdle shot acourse record 65 at Northmoor in the opening round ofthe Peoria Journal City Men's Open earning medalisthonors. He went on to win the tournament and repeatedas champion in 1958. He attended Bradley Universitywhere he was a member of the golf team. He was inductedinto the Bradley Athletics Hall of Fame in 1959. From 1963to 1977, Walt served as golf pro at the Peoria ParkDistrict's Newman golf course. An avid bowler, he wonnumerous trophies as high scorer. Walt died May 26, 2001.
