INDUCTED IN 2013
Sergio McClain played on one of the most heralded high
school teams in the nation, Peoria Manual. He helped them
to four consecutive IHSA Class AA Boys Basketball State
Championships during his prep career from 1993-1997.
Sergio was a four-time All-Conference selection, three
time All-State selection, Conference Player of the year in
1996-1997, and named Mr. Illinois Basketball in 1997 as a
senior, when he averaged 18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and
3.3 assists per game. He also lettered four years in Track.
McClain continued his basketball career at the University
of Illinois. While at Illinois he played for Lon Kruger and Bill
Self. Sergio had a strong career at Illinois, starting in 80 of
the 128 games he played in. He helped Illinois to a fouryear
record of 86-46, two Big Ten Championships and three
NCAA Tournaments bids, including an Elite Eight finish his
senior year. McClain had career totals of 841 points
(6.6 ppg), 512 rebounds (4.0 rpg),308 assists and 210 steals.
Contributed a career-best 5.5 rbg with 7.9 ppg and 102
assists as a senior. A short professional playing career in
the ABA and the NBA D-league followed. Sergio also
directed a pair of semipro teams and was head coach for
a year at Parkland College. Today Sergio has recently
joined his father Wayne McClain’s staff at Champaign
Central high school as an assistant coach.
