Walt Durdle was an outstanding athlete at Woodruff High
School where he played all four years in football,
basketball, and golf. He was named All City quarterback
in 1950 and the following year he was crowned Illinois
High School golf champion. That same year, 1951, Durdle
was on the Woodruff basketball team that advanced to
the Elite Eight of the Illinois state high school tournament
in Champaign. An outstanding golfer, Walt started winning
at an early age. He won the City A-Flight title in 1946 and
was Peoria Journal city medalist and champion in 1950. 
The next year he again won the Peoria Journal City Open
along with the Chicago Open. In 1952, Durdle shot a
course record 65 at Northmoor in the opening round of
the Peoria Journal City Men's Open earning medalist
honors. He went on to win the tournament and repeated
as champion in 1958. He attended Bradley University
where he was a member of the golf team. He was inducted
into the Bradley Athletics Hall of Fame in 1959. From 1963
to 1977, Walt served as golf pro at the Peoria Park
District's Newman golf course. An avid bowler, he won
numerous trophies as high scorer. Walt died May 26, 2001.
